Parent Guidance for the 2020-2021 School Year

As of September 1, 2020 the Elementary (Early Education - Grade 5) instructional model will be Face-to-Face or 100% Distance Learning. The instructional model for students in grades 6-12 will be Hybrid or 100% Distance Learning.

Early Education - Grade 5
Face-to-Face or 100% Distance Learning Model- E-5 will receive face-to face instruction.

100% Distance Learning Model

Instruction
Orientation
Teachers will focus on building relationships, routines and developing technology skills during the first weeks of school.Curriculum
ISD 728 curriculum will be delivered. Coursework will be aligned to Minnesota Academic Standards. Curriculum and grade level expectations will be the same as in the face-to-face classroom.Daily Interaction
- Required Engagement
- Students need to engage daily. (See Examples)
- Students will receive daily feedback (by teacher or automated).
- Both synchronous and asynchronous interactions will occur
- Synchronous meeting: (Live)
- 90 minutes should be broken into shorter segments.
- Teachers will provide Google Meet opportunities for student and parent Q&A.
- Teachers will provide 1 on 1, small group and whole group opportunities.
- Teachers will post daily learning activities in Schoology or Seesaw.
- Activities will include opportunities for students to practice, process, and demonstrate learning with teacher feedback.
- Google Meet will be used for all video conferencing.
- Google Meet sessions will be recorded for those students unable to attend live.
- At least 90 minutes of daily Google Meet time will be scheduled.
- Opportunities for remediation and enrichment will be provided.

Parent Communication
Initial Post
Teachers will share contact information, class protocols and schedules in the Learning Management System (LMS). [Schoology in Grades 3-5 and Seesaw in Grades E-2].- Course information, procedures, and communication will be distributed using the LMS listed above.
- Teachers will communicate office hours in the LMS.
- As a general rule, teachers should respond to all communication within 24 hours with the exception of weekends and holidays.
Daily Post
Teachers will post daily Seesaw Announcements or Schoology Updates.- A short to-do list of daily expectations will be posted.
- Google Meet opportunities will be communicated and posted.
Parent Contact
- Teachers will survey parents to determine when their child will be available for synchronous Google Meetings.
- Staff will coordinate consistent times for their Google Meetings when possible.

Student Communication/Engagement
Seesaw (Grades E-2)
- Journal Post: A video to welcome students will be provided daily. This video will include directions, where to find their activities and assignments.
- Activities: Learning activities for your child to complete will be posted, including directions and the due date in the title of each activity.
Schoology (Grades 3-5)
- Update: A daily update with to-do list will be posted.
- Slideshow: A daily slideshow will be provided including directions and an overview for the day.
- Include text directions and include an overview for the day (video, posting, etc)
- Folders: Teachers will post the date & title in daily folders.
- One main folder for the day (or for the week for playlists, project, etc).

Daily Attendance
Campus
Students (or their parents) will use the Campus Attendance Module to check in once per day for daily attendance.Verification
E-5 Staff will verify Distance Learners’ daily attendance by the end of day Monday for the previous week (based on evidence of engagement).Engagement
Students must engage daily with instructor or coursework. After 3 consecutive days of no engagement teachers will be contacting parents. -

Below is a sample schedule that illustrates the approximate times that will be allocated for content specific instruction. Instructors will communicate specific times when subjects will be taught.
This is an example of the approximate instructional times. Teachers may adjust schedules based on individual student/classroom needs.

Grade 6-12
Hybrid or 100% Distance Learning ModelAs of September 1, 2020, students in grade 6-12 will be participating in the Hybrid or 100% Distance Learning Model.

Overview
Classes will be delivered in either hybrid or 100% distance formats. Regardless of format, all students will receive an equitable learning opportunity.
- Hybrid students: During a five day week, these students will receive two days of traditional, face-to-face instruction each week and three days of remote learning.
- 100% distance students: During a five day week, these students will receive five days of remote learning with a minimum of two opportunities for live, Google Meet sessions.
- Hybrid students: During a five day week, these students will receive two days of traditional, face-to-face instruction each week and three days of remote learning.

Instruction
All Students
- Orientation: Students will receive an orientation from the teacher focused on building relationships, routines and developing technology skills.
- Curriculum: ISD 728 curriculum will be delivered. Coursework will be aligned to Minnesota Academic Standards. Curriculum and grade level expectations will be the same as in the face-to-face classroom.
- Daily Engagement:
- Students will engage in coursework daily. (See Examples)

- Students will receive on average 50-53 minutes of daily coursework for each class.
- Grading
- Traditional grading and letter grades (A-F) will be implemented.
100% Distance Students
- Synchronous meeting: (Live Google Meet)
- Google Meet will be used for all video conferencing.
- Teachers will offer a minimum of two live Google Meet sessions on a five day week and at least one Google Meet on a short week.
- Google Meet sessions will be recorded for those students unable to attend live.
- Asynchronous learning:(Work Completed In Schoology)
- Teachers will post daily learning activities in Schoology.
- Activities will include opportunities for students to practice, process, and demonstrate learning with teacher feedback.

Parent Communication
Schoology will be the online classroom and source of course information. Teachers will communicate daily expectations through a Schoology Update post. Course information, procedures, and communication will be distributed using Schoology. Parents may access and review student work through their parent Schoology account. As a general rule, teachers will respond to all communication within 24 hours with the exception of weekends and holidays.

- Updates will include a short to-do list of expectations for that day.

- Course Work:
- Parents can review daily coursework in Schoology folders labeled with dates.

Daily Attendance
In-school days
Attendance will be based on physical attendance in class.Remote days
Attendance will be based on two criteria: a self Campus check-in and course engagement. Students will check into each class period using the Campus Attendance Module. Students will also need to demonstrate engagement in virtual coursework. After 3 consecutive days of no engagement by 100% distance students, the teacher will contact the parent. -
