Elk River High School Safety On Site Investigation Concluded; Normal Operations to Resume Wednesday

Special Announcement

ISD 728 administration and the Elk River Police Department (ERPD) have determined there is no credible information indicating a threat to Elk River High School or any other district facility, and the school remains safe. In partnership with metro-area law enforcement agencies, ERPD has completed a thorough interior K9 search of the building for any evidence to substantiate the reported threat. ERPD continues to investigate the origin of the threat in coordination with school administration.

As a result, Elk River High School has resumed normal operations and standard schedules on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026.

The incident began Tuesday morning when school administrators received information regarding a potential threat specifically directed at the high school. District officials immediately engaged the Elk River Police Department to launch a joint evaluation. Out of an abundance of caution, officials executed a managed evacuation and early dismissal at 10:45 a.m., while ensuring all other area school buildings remained secure and unaffected.

Throughout the day, ERPD officers and school safety personnel worked in direct partnership to inspect the building, conduct interviews, and track the origin of the report.

"The safety of our students, staff, and community is our highest priority, and that responsibility is shared hand-in-hand with our local law enforcement partners," said ERHS Principal Mike Zeman. "We extend our deepest gratitude to the Elk River Police Department for their rapid response, expert guidance, and thorough investigation today. Their close partnership allowed us to act decisively, maintain order during the evacuation, and bring swift resolution to this situation."

District leaders also commended students, staff, and families for their calm cooperation during the evacuation and release process.

ISD 728 and the Elk River Police Department remind the community that school safety relies on collective vigilance. Students, families, and community members are always encouraged to report suspicious activity or safety concerns directly to school administration, law enforcement, or anonymously through SaySomething.net.

All evening extra-curricular activities at Elk River High School will operate on their standard schedules Wednesday, Sept. 16.
