Online728 was launched as a pilot program during the 2013-14 school year at Zimmerman High School. It began with an enrollment of only 30 students and one teacher. During the course of the school year, ISD 728 worked towards the goal of becoming a licensed online provider with the Minnesota Department of Education. This goal came to fruition at the tail end of the 2013-14 school year.
Since the start of the 2014-15 school year, Online728 has grown both in physical location as well as enrollment. All three of ISD 728 District High Schools have flexible learning spaces for online students. The program currently has teachers participating from all three high schools as well. Online728 delivers all courses through the District's Learning Management System (Schoology). This is expected to be a vast improvement for both students and teachers over past models. For the first time in the history of the program, Online 728 will have full-time teachers in the subject areas of English & Social Studies.
