ERHS: 10/24/2022 - Juniors - Job Shadow Day
900 School Street
Elk River, Minnesota 55330
Main Office: 763.241.3434
Fax: 763.241.3421
www.isd728.org/erhsOctober 24, 2022
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Elk River High School is excited to again offer Job Shadowing Day to our Juniors (Class of 2024)! We want to provide every 11th grade student an opportunity to explore a career interest. This opportunity aligns with ISD 728’s Strategic Plan. We currently provide every 11th grade student with a Mock Interview Day experience and all of our students engage in career assessments.
On Thursday, December 15, all Juniors are required to participate in a job shadowing opportunity. Eleventh grade students will not be attending school on this day. They will report directly to their job shadowing experience(s). This experience will be a minimum of three hours at one or two different job sites. Students will be required to set up their own job shadowing experience. Forms are due on Thursday, November 10, 2022.
Students should make contact with someone in a field of their choosing, preferably in a field they are interested in learning more about. The Chambers of Commerce in Elk River and Rogers have been made aware of this opportunity for ERHS students and are very excited to work with our students. Here are some questions you and your student may have:
-
How will I know what I am interested in doing? Refer to the interest inventories that you completed in Advisory (or will complete in the coming week). Or have a conversation with your family members, other relatives or other family contacts to narrow your interest.
-
Where do I go? You can go anywhere you want to have this experience. We ask that you do NOT go to your current job site or with a parent/guardian. However, if your current employer has a different career option for you to shadow, then it might be appropriate. This is an opportunity for you to shadow someone in a career setting you could possibly see yourself working in someday. Students are encouraged to experience at least 2 sites.
-
Do I have to do this? Yes, it is required of all juniors to participate in this opportunity on December 15.
-
Who is responsible for setting up the job shadow? The student is responsible for setting it up.
-
Can I shadow my parent/guardian? We would prefer that you do not job shadow a parent/guardian.
-
How do I dress? We would expect that you dress according to the job site’s dress code. Be sure to ask that question.
-
What do I do for lunch? You can bring your own lunch or bring money to go out for lunch. Again, this is a great question to ask your job site supervisor.
-
Will there be paperwork I have to turn in? Yes, you will be given a packet of information. You will need to turn in your consent /job shadow contact form to your World History teacher and the evaluation form to your English teacher. Forms are due on November 10, 2022
-
What is the purpose of this experience? It is an opportunity for our students to get a feel of what a potential career looks like. They have the opportunity to spend a day talking to people in the field, asking questions about the type of training needed, what the job market looks like and what the job entails.
-
What do I do if I cannot find a job shadow experience? Make an appointment with your counselor ASAP and they will help you. You can also sign up for Mr. Stueber’s Elk Time sessions for help.
-
Can I do my job shadow on a different day than December 15? We have only scheduled the 15th of December for this activity given the volume of student’s out of the building.
-
What if I cannot provide transportation? Many businesses are within walking distance from Elk River High School in many interest areas.
-
What happens after the Job Shadowing Day? Students will be working on an assignment in their Language Arts classes to reflect on their experience and write a professional thank you to community supporters.
Please make sure you and your student take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact either Matt Stueber or Kim Davison.
Sincerely,
Matt Stueber Kim Davison

ERHS 9/30/22: 2022 College fair was a success!
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Today our ERHS students attended the College Fair and had the opportunity to visit with a variety of post-secondary programs. Over 70 programs were represented, ranging from vocational, community and technical programs, as well as 4 year colleges and universities. Here is a list of schools that were in attendance. Please take time tonight to have a discussion with your students about their experience. Ask your students what schools they visited, what information they learned that was new or interesting, and what steps they should take next to help them plan for life after high school. Thank you for partnering with ERHS to help make this event a meaningful experience. -
ERHS 9/30/22: A message from the Principal
ERHS Parents/Guardians,
ISD 728 Officials have been made aware that there are rumors in the community and on social media about alleged student overdoses at Elk River High School this week. To alleviate concerns and to provide accurate information, there were no overdoses.
Emergency personnel were called to school yesterday to respond to various student needs, which we recognize is unusual and can cause concern. Students were evaluated and released.
We want to assure you that as part of our practice and protocols, we continue to collaborate with Emergency personnel and appreciate the partnership.
