Adult Basic Education (ABE)
...more than a GED

  • The mission of the Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program is to provide instruction in the basic skills of reading, writing, and mathematics to adult learners in order to prepare them for transitioning into the labor market or higher academic or vocational training.

This free program helps adults age 18 or older (who are not enrolled in a secondary school) develop these basic skills. The Elk River Learning Lab is a member of Metro North ABE, a consortium of Community Education departments of nine school districts. It is located at the Handke Center at 1170 Main Street in Elk River, MN.

The GED® test was updated in 2014 to make sure it measures what graduating high school seniors know and what colleges and employers will expect of you.
The tests are offered on computer. The tests are offered in English and Spanish. The four parts of the test include:

    • Science (90 minutes)
    • Social Studies (90 minutes)
    • Reasoning through Language Arts (150 minutes including a 10-minute break)
    • Mathematical Reasoning (120 minutes)

The fee per subject area is $30 per test and you can pay as you go; this means you pay for each subject individually when you are ready to test. ABE participants are eligible for $10 discount on each test.

On the GED® test you need to earn at least 150 points on each subject to pass. To find out if you’re likely to pass, take the GED Ready TM , the official practice test which is the only test that can tell you if you’re likely to pass. Office practice tests cost $6 each, but enroll in our GED® prep program, attend 12 hours or more and become eligible for at least 2 free practice tests!

By attending our GED® preparation program, you increase your potential to pass the exam. Prepare online, get 1:1 help during independent study time, or attend a small group.
